Edward Vermurlen Obituary: Edward T. Vermurlen, a distinguished architect and beloved member of the Grand Rapids community, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024, at the age of 78.
Born on November 8, 1945, in Grand Haven, Michigan, Ed was the son of the late Jacob and Mildred Vermurlen. He will be deeply missed by his devoted wife of almost 55 years, Ruth Vermurlen, his sister Mary (Rich) Marod, his brother Charles (Marylou) Vermurlen, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Jake (Judy) Vermurlen.
Ed dedicated his professional life to architecture, leaving an indelible mark on the built environment. He served as President of the American Institute of Architects, demonstrating his commitment to advancing the field and fostering excellence in design. His passion for architecture was matched only by his love for his faith and community. A devout member of Calvary Church, Ed cherished his time with the 724 Bible Study Group, where he found fellowship and spiritual nourishment.
Beyond his professional and religious affiliations, Ed will be remembered as a loving husband, uncle, and friend. His warmth, kindness, and generosity touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion.
A memorial service celebrating Ed’s remarkable life will be held at Calvary Church, 707 E. Beltline Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525, at a later date. Details regarding the service will be announced in due course.
