John Wood Obituary: John Patrick “Pat” Wood, known affectionately as Pat, passed away peacefully at his home in Ninety Six on Friday, March 15, 2024, at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn Bledsoe Wood.

Born on November 12, 1942, in Greenwood, SC, Pat was the son of the late John Tommie “J.T.” and Virginia Painter Wood. He was a proud graduate of Ninety Six High School, and furthered his education at Spartanburg Methodist College, Lander College, and Erskine College, earning his Master’s Degree from South Carolina State University. Pat dedicated his professional life to education, retiring from Emerald Junior High School where he taught PE and history. He also served as a football coach at Emerald Junior High School and Hickory Tavern Middle School, leaving a lasting impact on countless students. An avid supporter of the Carolina Gamecocks, Pat’s passion for sports was unmatched.

Pat was a devoted member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where his faith played a central role in his life.

He is survived by his loving children: Gray Wood (Magen) of Ninety Six, Brian Wood (Gina) of Greenwood, Patti Wood Hester (Bryan), and Fran Wood (fiancé Rick Harrison), both of Ninety Six. Pat was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren: Jessica Wood Hoppe (Josh), Ashley Hester Harding (Tyler), Alex Hester (Ashley), Ryan Skidmore, Madelyn Wood, Patrick Wood, Colson Wood, Preston Wood, and Graham Wood. He also cherished his three great-grandchildren: Elijah Graham Hoppe, Rosie Hoppe, and Collins Harding. In addition to his wife, Pat was preceded in death by his sister, Jenny Sue Hastings.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Ninety Six, followed by burial at Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 AM until the time of service.
