Born on October 24, 1938, Sophia, affectionately known as “Pedie,” was the beloved daughter of the late Bertice and Iona Hayes Matthews. She was the devoted wife of Jerome William “Sonny” Creeger, Jr., whom she married on September 1, 1956. Sophia was a graduate of Salemburg High School and embarked on a fulfilling career journey, starting as a hairdresser and concluding as the Director of Cosmetology at Sampson Community College.
A devout member of Corinth Baptist Church, Sophia found deep fulfillment in her involvement in the choir and teaching the youth Sunday School class. However, her greatest joy came from her role as a wife, mother, and granny. Sophia had a knack for orchestrating family gatherings, ensuring everyone experienced joy and togetherness. She cherished planning brunches for her lifelong friends, engaging in card games, and embarking on countless shopping adventures with her sisters.
Sophia is survived by her loving daughter, Connie Kraft of Bowling Green, Kentucky; two sons, Greg Creeger and wife Joan of Salisbury, and Doug Creeger and wife Melanie of Roseboro. Her legacy continues through her five grandchildren: Timothy Faircloth, Leslie Faircloth Strickland, Holly Creeger Wagoner (Ben), Kasey Creeger Misenheimer (Sam), and Abby Creeger Harwood (Drew). She was also blessed with twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Sophia leaves behind three sisters, Linda Matthews of Salemburg, Laura Matthews Warren of Salemburg, and Priscilla Matthews Stevens of Knoxville, Tennessee, as well as one brother, Bertice Don Matthews and wife Betty Sue of Clinton, and a host of cherished nieces and nephews.
Sophia’s life was a testament to love, compassion, and the joy of family bonds. While she may have departed from this world, her spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched with her warmth and grace.
