General Al Gray Obituary: Ex-Marine Corps Commandant died at 95

Al Gray Obituary: General Alfred M. Gray, the 29th Commandant of the Marine Corps, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday after an extended period of hospice care. He was 95 years old and hailed from New Jersey.

Rising from the rank of private to four-star general, General Gray led the Marine Corps during pivotal moments, including the fall of the Soviet Union and the Persian Gulf War.

Retired Lt. Gen. George Flynn, acting as his power of attorney, confirmed Gray’s passing at 12:57 a.m. due to health complications in his Alexandria, Virginia residence, where he had been receiving hospice care.

General Gray served as Commandant from 1987 to 1991, concluding a distinguished 41-year military career. Throughout his tenure and retirement, he earned the admiration of Marines both in and out of uniform.

Even after retiring, General Gray remained actively involved in Marine Corps initiatives, programs, and organizations, including the Marine Corps Association and Foundation, the Semper Fi Fund, the Potomac Institute, and various Marine unit functions and events.

Joining the Marine Corps in 1950, General Gray earned his commission as a second lieutenant in 1952.

As the commanding officer of the Composite Artillery Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, General Gray displayed remarkable courage and leadership.
